CERTIFICATE COURSE ON BALAPANCHAKARMA – 2025
A Certificate Course on Balapanchakrma was organized by the Department of PG Studies in Kaumarabhritya at SDM College of Ayurveda, Hospital and Research Centre,
Udupi from 3/10/2025 to 10/10/2025.
The main focus of the program was to get a deeper understanding of adaptation of the core therapies of Panchakarma, into pediatrics. The virtual sessions began with the principle of Snehana (Oleation Therapy), elaborated by Dr. Nayan Kumar (Associate Professor, Department of Kaumarabhritya, SDMCAH, Hassan). On 4/10/2025, Dr. Chitralekha (Assistant Professor, Department of Kaumarabhritya, SDMCAHRC, Udupi) discussed concept of Swedana (Sudation Therapy)in children. On 5/10/2025, Dr. Sahana Shankari, (Associate Professor, Department of PG Studies in Kaumarabhritya, SDMCAHRC, Udupi) spoke on the concepts of Nasya and Dhoomapana (Nasal instillation therapy) procedure in pediatric population. On 6/10/2025, Dr. Roshini Anirudhan (Professor and Head of Department of Kaumarabhritya, GAMC, Thiruvananthapuram) delivered the session on Application of Vamana(vomiting) and Virechana(purgation). To broaden the participants’ exposure beyond classical Panchakarma, a specialized session was conducted on 7/10/2025 by Prof. Dr. N. Shunmugom (Founder & Chief, Vethasatthi Expert Thirumolar Vethasatthi Academy, Coimbatore) on Vethasatthi Maruthuvam (Marma Chikitsa in Pediatrics). Dr. Dinesh K S (Associate Professor & HOD Department of Kaumarabhritya, VPSWA College, Kottakal) elaboratively delivered a session on Utility of Basti Chikitsa(Enema therapy)in pediatrics, on 8/10/205. The course further offered a session on Vidha Karma (bloodletting)in children, by Dr. Chandrakumar Deshmukh, a renowned physician of Viddhakarma, Agnikarma with extensive pediatric practice in Autism & CP. This was followed by a session from Dr. Ashutosh Chaturvedi ( MD PhD MBA – ISB) on financial planning for the establishment of Bala Panchakarma Unit by the physicians. All the above sessions were conducted on virtual mode between 6-8pm from 3rd to 9th of October 2025.
On 10/10/25 practical offline sessions were carried out demonstrating arrangements of pre requisites, step by step method of conduction of procedure, post procedure management. Dr. Chitralekha,Assistant Professor, Department of Kaumarabhritya, SDMCAHRC, Udupi & Dr.Anju K.L (Assistant Professor, Department of Kaumarabhritya, SDMCAHRC, Udupi) conducted practical session on Swedana, Dr.Nayankumar, (Associate Professor, Department of Kaumarabhritya, SDMCAH, Hassan) conducted practical session on snehana and basti karma in paediatrics, Dr. Kavya, Assistant Professor, Department of Kaumarabhritya, SDMCAHRC, Udupi gave practical demonstration on Udwartana and utsadana(powder massage) in children. Dr.Prathviraj Puranik, Chief Organizing Secretary, Professor & Head of Department of Kaumarabhritya, SDM College of Ayurveda, Hospital and Research Centre, Udupi gave practical training on Nasya Karma in children, Dr. Sahana Shankari demonstrated the procedure of Navajata Shishu abhyanaga and snana (new born baby massage and decoction bath).
The programme ended with valedictory function including certificate distribution to the delegates from various parts of the country and overseas. The course empowered and enhanced approximately 55 participants including faculties, practitioners, post graduates with the confidence to apply these concepts effectively and responsibly in pediatric clinical practice.
Dr.P.R. Puranik, chief organizing Secretary, welcomed the gathering. Dr.Sahana Shankari, Course co-ordinator did brief reporting of the entire course. Chief guest, Dr.Shailaja U, Principal, SDMCA, Hassan joined the occasion in virtual mode and emphasized the importance of balapanchakarma, as it enhanced the treatment outcome instead of only oral medications in chronic pediatric diseases and congratulated the organizers. Dr.Nayan Kumar, Associate Professor, SDMCARCH, Hassan, motivated the delegates to apply the learnt skills in pediatric condition with confidence. Dr.Mamata KV, Principal, SDMCAHRC, Udupi in her presidential address said that balapanchakarma has to be performed with all the precautions and safety measures in pediatric population to prevent defaming of the science.
